Sometimes the spiritual road feels like walking through mud. . Each step labored and exhausting. Heavy footed, dredging through the muck of all our stuff. . But there is a trick with mud. . Don’t resist. Walk slowly. Let it hold you back, even. . And when you get frustrated, because we all do.... . Love it. Thank it. Kneel down and touch it in reverence and honor for its wisdom. . Then, simply walk on. Head up, eyes open, and heart unshielded for whatever terrain our path greets us with next. . Our legs might be tired. But they are also stronger and fueled with an energy that only wading through mud can cultivate. . So, like a small but mighty engine take one, slow, weighted step at a time. . In each of us, there is a deep longing, a yearning for connection. This is the meaning of Bhakti — what is often translated as love or devotion to God, or Divine. . . Inherent within this — what I would call — universal experience, is a profound sorrow. One that cuts to the core of our being. We long for this connection so much, that it makes us weep. . . I will speak for myself when I say that so often I resist this sorrow. But lately, I am starting to see that this sorrow, this pain, unlocks the door to the connection we so desperately seek. . Joy and sorrow, love and pain, connection and longing — are eternally linked, married forever in the most sacred of unions. Let us embrace them both in equal measure. Nothing like major expansion on the first day of the year. 💫This was my first time playing live music 🎶 for an entire yoga class — something I have dreamt of doing for quite a while. 🌀That 2019 began with this, is pretty surreal. It was a quiet Christmas. It was a reflective Christmas. . It was the first year that my family spent in the mountains. Just us. Just my dad, mom, brother, and me. . The tradition up to this point has been that we would go to my grandparents’ place, along with our 20 some-odd relatives. . It was always a beautiful, magical day. . But this year it just didn’t make sense to do that. My parents’ moved to the mountains a few years ago, and my brother joined them in the middle of last year. And since my brother is an aspiring chef with a pretty busy schedule, heading down south to be with everyone else on Christmas, meant that the four of us wouldn’t be together. . So, we sacrificed the big gathering in favor of just us and the mountains. . I’ve never experienced Christmas this way. Slow. Quiet. Space. . . I spent much of the day in front of the fire place — practicing yoga, meditating, breathing, playing my guitar, singing, and simply being with my family as they went about doing what they were doing. The whole day felt like a quiet contemplation. Aware and simply being. . . At several times throughout the day I felt myself well up with quiet tears, just for me. I’m not sure I could say where the tears came from. But I can feel that the deepest parts of me know what they were for. . Healing. Releasing. Shedding. Growing. Learning. Forgiving. Loving. . All of these and more flowing through me, seemingly at once as I sat, hands over my heart, silently weeping as my brother quietly rocked in the rocking chair behind me. I don’t think he knew I was crying. It was better this way. . Throughout the day we also shared gifts, a few beautiful meals, and clinked glasses, celebrating us. Celebrating just being together. . .
